Own a RYOBI Hedge Trimmer? Check This Recall for Information on Laceration Risks

Own a RYOBI Hedge Trimmer? Check This Recall for Information on Laceration RisksOn June 12, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a recall of RYOBI 40V 24-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmers.

The commission reports that “…the hedge trimmer blade can unexpectedly activate after pressing just the safety or trigger control individually rather than engaging the safety and trigger controls simultaneously, posing a laceration hazard.” The CPSC has received 16 reports of injuries (minor and severe lacerations). Additionally, 27 consumers reported that the blade activated after pressing one control rather than both.

Which hedge trimmers are involved in the recall?

The recall number for the hedge trimmers is 25-344, and it affects approximately 113,000 units. If you believe that you may have purchased one of the recalled hedge trimmers, you should check the model and serial number to see if it’s potentially dangerous. To identify whether your hedge trimmer is among those recalled:

  • Check if your model is a RYOBI 40V 24-Inch Cordless Hedge Trimmer.
  • Look for the model number. Models RY40620VNM, RY40602VNM, or RY40602BTLVNM are part of the recall.
  • Find the serial number, which is on the data plate at the bottom of the product. The recall impacts serial numbers LT21091D180001 – LT22365D060025 and RG23125N250001 – RG24252D101110.

According to the CPSC, Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores sold the hedge trimmers between March 2021 and January 2025. Retailers sold them both in stores and online for $90-$160.

What should I do if I have a recalled hedge trimmer?

Consumers who are in possession of any RYOBI 40V 24-inch cordless hedge trimmer that is subject to the recall will need to return the device. Although TTI Outdoor Power Equipment (TTIOPE) is contacting all known purchasers, they likely do not have the information for everyone who owns this trimmer.  You can double check whether yours is included at https://www.ryobitools.com/recall. If it is, stop using the trimmer immediately.

You can return your defective hedge trimmer to TTIOPE. The manufacturer will provide a replacement at no cost to the consumer, and a pre-paid label. You do not need a receipt to return a trimmer that is subject to the recall.

What should I do if I was injured by a defective hedge trimmer?

If you suffered injury from a defective hedge trimmer, especially if it was part of this recall, take the following steps to protect your health and your legal rights:

  • Seek medical attention immediately. If the injury is serious, call 911 or visit the ER. For less severe injuries, visit your healthcare provider. Explain how the accident happened and obtain detailed treatment documentation.
  • Photograph everything, including the trimmer, visible defects, your injury, and the accident scene. Keep the trimmer in a safe spot and save your receipt or proof of purchase.
  • Do not use the trimmer again, even for testing. The RYOBI 40 V 24-inch models are recalled due to an unexpected start hazard.
  • Visit the manufacturer’s recall portal to check your serial number and obtain a free repair or replacement.
  • Inform the manufacturer (TTI Outdoor Power Equipment) of the incident, but don’t give a recorded statement or accept any offers before consulting with an experienced Maryland lawyer.
  • Keep all medical bills, receipts, photos, repair documents, recall notices, and any communication about the incident. This can be essential evidence. Get witness statements if others were present at the time of the accident.
